WHO Futures Art Exhibition

Welcome to the WHO Futures Art Exhibition: Envisioning the Future of Health in 2050.
Art is a powerful tool in understanding ourselves and the world, and health has been at the center of our hopes and fears. This is why the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Western Pacific is hosting the Region’s first art exhibition of the kind.

Here, artists from around the world shared their vision of the future health in the Western Pacific Region. They addressed some important questions: How might our health and well-being be impacted by society by 2050? How will economic development affect health in 30 years? Will there be inequalities, and how will they threaten people’s health? How might our health and well-being be impacted by technology by 2050? What will the climate look like in 30 years? What will be the status of air, water and soil? What will be the state of biodiversity in the Region?

While you enjoy the artwork, please share your ideas, your reflections, or your own vision of the futures of health in 2050 of the Western Pacific Region in the comment section under each piece.

Future vision of Environment

Artist Statement: Indiscriminate food consumption and climate change have made all food resources extinct except some insects. In 2050, insects are served for dinner in high-end restaurants. You should think about what you can do to prevent your birthday dinner from being full of insects.

Future vision of People and Society

Artist Statement: My work is rooted in an environmental consciousness that derives from my concern for the Earth's rapidly declining health. I use it to highlight the misuse and abuse that we inflict on the natural world. My forms are influenced by domestic and industrial objects that I experience in my daily life that are indicative of eco-friendly tools and warning symbols. I marry my earthen objects with industrial surplus. The mixed media speaks to the complex relationship that humanity has with nature.

Future vision of People and Society

Artist Statement: The Pacific people, whose actions inspired this work, resolutely defend their ancestral homes and cultures that are under threat from global warming. This work is conceived as a warning: a transitioning and fragmenting world hovers on the edge of the abyss. Will the world’s leaders take heed, or allow the world to overheat, and its societies fragment? A 2050 world envisions action now to prevent islands such as Tuvalu being taken by the sea to become the first climate change refugee nation.

Future vision of People and Society

Artist Statement: In my face, I can see the visages of those disconnected and isolated, wearing facial masks. Their anxious, tired countenances, just like my own... The COVID19 pandemic has distanced people from each other and reminded people how precious human proximity is. The difficult times today become a reminder to how much other people mean to us. I hope they turn into desirable openings of new relationships.

Future vision of People and Society

Artist Statement: By 2020, society will be more people-centred and technology-powered. The rise of megacities will be one of the noticeable trends—many people will choose to live in an environment that is highly-populated and technology-advanced. With the prevalence of electric cars that could "fly" and sustainable environment (e.g., vertical farming), high-rises that could serve as a megacentre of shops and services (e.g., physical and virtual supermarkets, restaurants, hospitals, etc.) will be more common.

Future vision of Economy

Artist Statement: The economy will become more sustainable. One trend will be greater integration of "greenness" into living spaces, which means that the line between living spaces and economic activities will be blurrier. One possibility would be an ecosystem of high-rises and vertical farming.

Future vision of Technology

Artist Statement: With the presence and increased prevalence of robots and flying cars, technology will be more disruptive. The marriage of cheaper green energy and more capable mobility will significantly improve individual agency and autonomy. Not to mention the health opportunities connected technologies, such as virtual reality-powered metaverses, could unleash.

Artist Statement: As health data become more available, data breaches and compromises (e.g., cybercrimes) will become more alarmingly frequent and intrusive. The issue of health privacy will be top of mind of the public, as people will become more cognizant of the fact that data are both personal and private, they are the cornerstone of who we are and what we are.

Future vision of Technology

Artist Statement: Alone - Distinctive personal style and use of color permeates throughout this work. Use of acrylic paints over black canvas. Alone - the struggle we as a society are still having with the balance of technology versus in person interactions makes for a very lonely environment at times.

Future vision of Environment

Artist Statement: Your attention is presented to the work on glass. Size 40/30 centimeters. Made with oil paints and ink. I depict the future of the city in which I live. It is saturated with production, there is smoke that poisons the air, the sky is gray, conveys an atmosphere of pollution. The work is deliberately done in dark colors to show the oppressive atmosphere. In the foreground, fir trees are shown, which are not green, but brown from pollution. This is the problem of our future, because forests and ri

Artist Statement: The Scientific Method of Escapism details two inner city children discussing human DNA and the cell production in the body for advancements in treatments of the human body. I believe innovations health will increase dramatically in the coming years with a population now studying medicine who have been immersed in technology from an early age. I hope more funding for education availability will become available in the future as well as we are definitely missing out on what these minds can share.

Future vision of People and Society

Artist Statement: From SARS to the new coronavirus, the flesh has proved nothingness and existence. There is only one thing in life that is very certain, that is, life is death in the end, and everyone is living towards death. I don't want to express the beautiful things in human society. What I want to express is the criticism and thinking of real life, such as the game between people, the impact of the deterioration of the ecological environment, and so on.

Michael Laughlin
Future vision of the Open Category

Artist Statement: The series Overlook examines the entropy of visual culture and the discord of perception. It deconstructs how our culture consumes imagery by masking iconography within layers of line, shape, color and rhythm. Overlook is a critique of a willingness to adapt to new sensibilities in observation. Its intention is to provoke the viewer to seek out what is familiar yet veiled by dissonance, and invites the viewer to engage with misleading, irrelevant, fragmented and superficial information.
